Proposed Nassau County Routes

Years ago, Nassau had a signed county route system, just like Suffolk. It was extremely extensive. The numbers ranged from 1 to 191, with very few numbers being skipped. The 1962 version of the Official Map of Nassau County showed the proposed road network for Nassau. A copy of this map is available for viewing at the Nassau County Planning Commission, although it is very large and therefore not reproducible. The map shows several unbuilt proposed state routes, including the Caumsett Parkway and sections of the Bethpage Parkway, the Nassau Expressway (NY 878), and the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway (NY 135). However, every county route shown on the map was built and most are still under the jurisdiction of the county. It is unknown whether signage was posted for all of the county routes only for a subset of them. The routes were marked with orange and blue pentagonal shields. Later, the federal government set standards for county route signage and Nassau's signs were not compliant. Since Nassau did not have adequate money to purchase the new signs necessary to come into compliance, the signs were all removed and all Nassau county routes became secret designations. The system has changed substantially in the time since. Many roads under the jurisdiction of the county no longer have route numbers. Only few routes, specifically CR 2, CR 26, CR 27, CR 63, CR 105, and CR 181 have not been shortened, lengthened, or otherwise modified since 1962.
