Northern Terminus: Outerbridge Crossing at the New York-New Jersey border
NJ 440 is a short expressway connecting the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) and the
Middlesex Freeway (I-287) to the Outerbridge Crossing, a bridge over the Arthur
Kill connecting New Jersey and Staten Island. It is also known as the Middlesex
Freeway, continuing the name of I-287 between I-95 and the bridge. There are
several unnumbered exits in both directions. On the other side of the bridge,
NJ 440 becomes the West Shore Expressway (NY 440). NY 440 ends at the Bayonne
Bridge. There is a second section of NJ 440 in Bayonne and Jersey City that
connects to the northern end of the NY 440 via the Bayonne Bridge.
