Welcome to New Jersey! I-95 is known as the New Jersey Turnpike beginning here. The exit numbers at its northern end are a continuation of the exit numbering scheme for the Bergen-Passaic Expressway (I-80), which begins a short distance ahead. Exit 74 is for the Palisades Parkway (NJ 445). Exit 73 is for NJ 67 and US 9W.

The turnpike splits into two separate sets of lanes, the express lanes and the local lanes. The express lanes provide access to only the most major exits, while the local lanes provide access to all exits. This lane configuration only exists on the turnpike from here to the beginning of I-80, which also has express and local lanes. Exit 72B is for US 1/US 9/US 46. It is located just before the split.

The turnpike splits into two separate roadways, known as the eastern spur and the western spur, which merge back together a few miles south of here. The signage here does not explain what is happening but simply instructs motorists which way to go for the upcoming exits. For the eastern spur, bear right from the express lanes or bear left from the local lanes. For the western spur, bear left from the express lanes or bear right from the local lanes. Motorists wishing to access exit 17, exit 15X, or the Vince Lombardi Service Area must use the eastern spur. Motorists wishing to access exit 16W must use the western spur. Motorists with a destination further south may use either spur.

The eastern and western spurs of the turnpike come together here to form a large ten-lane highway. Of the five lanes in each direction, the left three lanes are for cars only and the right two lanes are for all types of vehicles. These are colloquially known as the "car lanes" and "truck lanes," respectively. Exit 14 and exits 14A-C are for I-78, US 1/US 9, and US 22. To access these exits, use the truck lanes.

Exit 6 is for the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-276) and US 130. At this point, I-95 leaves the mainline of the turnpike and runs east as a turnpike extension to the New Jersey-Pennsylvania border. There are no signs to indicate this, although that will likely change in the future. Take exit 6 to stay on I-95. The mainline of the turnpike continues straight ahead with the unsigned designation of NJ 700.
