New York City Major Roadways
Note:
There are no county routes within the five boroughs of New York City. With the
exception of the expressways and parkways that are under the jurisdiction of the
state, all roads in the five boroughs are owned and maintained by the New York
City Department of Transportation. There are no route numbers other than on
interstates and state routes that run through the city. In 2003, the NYCDOT
began installing oversized street name signs on certain major roadways. These
are large signs that hang from traffic light poles and give the name of the cross
street. While these major roadways are not officially a route system, they do
form a network of the city's major streets and are the closest thing to county
routes that New York City has.
