US 9W is an alternative to US 9 running along the west side of the Hudson River. It begins at US 1/US 9 in Fort Lee, NJ, and runs north, crossing into New York after just over eleven miles. It continues north, parallel to the New York Thruway (I-87), to Albany, where it ends at Clinton Avenue (US 9). US 9W goes through a number of different names in the various towns through which it passes. It has no name in many of the rural areas between major towns. Most of US 9W is a two-lane undivided road, although some portions are wider. The section passing through Highland Falls, Storm King Mountain, and Cornwall is a limited-access highway.
