April 1, 2008 It has just been announced that, due to a lack of money, the New York State Department of Transportation will be giving up control of the Long Island Expressway (I-495) and transferring it to the New York State Thruway Authority, which will maintain it as a toll highway, henceforth to be known as the Long Island Thruway. Due to the lack of space for tollbooths along exit ramps, the tolls will be collected at various points along the highway itself, in a system similar to what currently exists on the Garden State Parkway in New Jersey. There will be two tolls in Queens, two in Nassau, and five in Suffolk, each of which shall cost $1.00. More information is available here.
